From Finland! The strongest outdoor EDC knife “Skrama”

Well, that’s why, in conclusion, the crazy Finnish knife is too good and spicy. I don’t know what I’m saying if it’s just this, so I’ll introduce you step by step.

 

Terävä Skrama 240

In the Scandinavian Peninsula, the birthplace of Bushcraft, not only Bushcraft technology but also tools are wonderful. In particular, the knife is a typical item, and the cutting method called “Scandinavian grind” has become well established worldwide. The knife introduced this time is “Skrama 240” from the brand Terävä in Finland, and in a word, it is a knife that likes EDC.

It’s big enough to be used on Friday the 13^th. This is the case, but as the name Skrama 240 suggests, it has a blade length of 240 mm.

 

First of all, I will summarize the specifications.

Outstanding strength

As you can see, or just as you can see, Skrama is very strong.

First of all, it has a blade thickness of 4 mm, so it won’t be afraid even if it is slightly buttoning. The manufacturer’s nominal was 4.2mm, but this is 4mm by all means. I don’t care about this area at all because it is common in overseas products, and it has no effect on actual use, so if you care about it one by one, it will be through. The structure is the toughest full tongue (made of one piece of steel from the cutting edge to the grip end), so there are no elements to break in the first place.

 

Blades with different angles

Only here is a sharp angle. One of the major features of Skrama is that the angle of the blade is different between the root and the tip. The base edge near the grip has a sharp angle (25 °), and the main edge from there to the tip has a slightly shallow angle (34 °). Sharpening the blade will improve the sharpness, so make it easier to do fine work with the base edge, and when using it for hard work such as buttoning and chopping, use the main edge with a shallow angle and good blade holding.

 

It is a specification that can be done because the blade length is long, but I feel that it is really well thought out. The disadvantage is that it is difficult to grind. This is a part that requires some getting used to, but you won’t have much trouble.

 

Loosely curved edges

It’s beautiful curvaceous. The edge (blade) draws a gentle curve toward the tip. Don’t you think this curve is so beautiful? Do you think so?

 

Basically, the edge of the knife is curved, though it is strong and weak. If it is a straight line, the area where the object and the edge of the knife are in contact will be slightly larger, and the force will escape evenly, making it difficult to cut.

 

If the edge is curved, the object will hit the top of the curve, and the force will be concentrated on one point for better sharpness. Did you understand why I say this exquisite curve is beautiful? In short, the ultimate functional beauty is packed into this edge.

 

Destructive power generated from heavy-class weight

It’s quite heavy. The weight of the Skrama 240 was 525g in the catalog value, but it was 518g in the actual measurement value. This difference is within the range of error. I think the best-selling EDC knife is probably the Mora knife companion heavy duty, but it weighs just over 100g, so you can see how heavy 500g is. This weight is both a disadvantage and an advantage. If the weight is heavy, it will be difficult to do detailed work, but the destructive power is outstanding. When you cut a tree branch by chopping, its weight comes into play. If you find it difficult to do detailed work, you can bring another small knife and do it.

 

Non-slip rubber grip

It’s with a big loop at the grip end. With such a large and heavy knife, there is a danger that your hand will slip during work and the knife will fly out completely. But don’t worry. The grip of the Skrama is made of rubber, which makes it quite non-slip. The grips of Micarta and natural wood are cool, but if you are only pursuing practicality, I feel that the rubber handle is the best.

 

Various ways to hold with a long grip

Not only is the Skrama 240 long, but the grip is also designed to be quite long. Sensually, it’s 1.5 times more likely than a typical knife.

Have a short. Basically, I think that you often work by holding the part close to the blade. In this state, you will not be swayed by the weight of the knife, and your hands will be close to the center of gravity, so you will not feel that heavy.

 

If you hold the grip end, you can make the most of its weight, so it is ideal for chopping branches and swinging down the knife. As a matter of course, the hand moves away from the center of gravity, so you can feel the weight.

 

Cornered back

It’s firmly edgy back. Most knives have a slightly rounded back, but the Skrama 240 has sharp corners. Rather than saying, the back has been scraped from the beginning to custom the corners stand. What’s good about this is that you can use a metal match in the back. Metal match is a tool that produces sparks by scraping the rod of the main body with a metal striker, but if the corners of the striker are not standing, the sparks cannot be scattered. I think you can understand that it is impossible to scrape metal with metal if the striker has no corners. In short, the back of the Skrama 240 has a structure that allows you to scrape metal matches to generate sparks.

 

The hole at the tip has no particular meaning

It’s somehow a meaningful hole. There is a hole with a diameter of less than 1 cm at the tip of the blade, but this hole has no deep meaning. Because this hole needs to hang a knife during the manufacturing process and is only opened for that purpose, it is not intended for any special use. However, I think it’s okay to consider the usage if it is free. I can’t think of it right away.

 

Two types of sheaths

Plastic sheath and leather sheath. The Skrama 240 comes with two types of sheaths. The image above is a simple plastic sheath, but it is a leather sheath. Probably most people will use a leather sheath, but a plastic sheath looks good on a custom base. However, depending on the time of manufacture and the vendor, there may be only one type, so please check before purchasing.

 

I actually used it

I actually used it in a day camp. When I tried the sharpness in advance, it has a sharp blade that cuts the copy paper smoothly. I could handle pruning without any problems, and even if I used it a little hard, there were no chips or curls, and the sharpness did not deteriorate. It’s a good sticky steel material. I forgot to take a video, but I also made chopsticks using the base edge near the grip. It has a sharper angle than the main edge and bites into the wood well, so you can do simple work at all.

 

However, due to its weight, it is not suitable for long hours of detailed work.

 

Summary

To be honest, I feel like I’ve come across a highly satisfying knife for the first time in a while. My current perception is that it is an excellent knife that has both the sharpness of a razor and the destructive power of EDC. The reason I said it in the current situation is that I just bought it and have not confirmed the maintenance performance. It may be difficult to sharpen or the blade holding was not so good, so the final evaluation can only be done after about half a year.

 

If there is a demerit, is it still weight? I didn’t feel that way, but it’s a fact that it’s quite heavy for women and children. Although it is a knife that chooses the user a little, it is a very good knife with a high presence and satisfaction.
