Remake the cutting board! How to dye coffee / tea & how to custom wooden tableware last longer, Shieldon

Wooden tableware that is popular for its warm appearance and texture. I think there are many people who have one. The coating applied to wooden tableware will peel off as it is used, so regular maintenance is required. Maintenance sounds difficult, but it’s actually very easy! I actually tried the maintenance and remake of the wooden cutting board. Everything you need is at home, so you can get started right away!

[Correct usage to custom wooden tableware last longer] Do not put hot things on it, dry it, use a range, etc. NG

Wooden tableware with a natural texture. I often get the impression that it looks good but is a little cumbersome to handle, but it’s actually not that much of a hassle.

All you need to remember are the following three points. If you hold down this much, your favorite wooden tableware will last longer.

① Do not put hot things on as much as possible

There are two main types of painting of wooden tableware on the market: lacquer painting and urethane painting. Of these, the lacquer coating is particularly sensitive to heat, and when used with hot dishes, it quickly peels off.

And if the coating on the surface is peeled off and the tree is exposed, it will cause the tree to hurt.

Avoid sprinkling freshly made soups and fried foods to custom the painting last as long as possible.

② Wash with dish washing detergent and OK! Drying is a must because I hate water

Wash wooden tableware with dish washing detergent just like regular tableware. Wash and dry immediately after use.

Trees don’t like water, so avoid soaking wooden dishes in water for long periods of time.

③ Use of microwave oven is NG

Of course, you can’t use an oven, but it’s strictly forbidden to heat it in a microwave.

Moisture in the wood expands due to heat, causing cracks in the tableware and peeling of the paint. Also, it is not suitable for storage in a refrigerator. Use wooden tableware only for serving ready-to-eat dishes.

Wooden tableware needs to be more careful than melamine tableware. However, the tableware that makes the best use of the texture of natural wood is still good! I want to cherish it.

[Maintenance method for wooden cutting board] Remove with a brush, let the oil blend in and dry!

Use cooking oil for maintenance!

The paint on the surface of wooden tableware is not forever. No matter how careful you use it, the paint will gradually peel off and lose its luster.

In such a case, maintenance using cooking oil is recommended. It’s very easy to do, just apply a small amount of oil to the surface of the wood and then dry it. You can easily do it with what you have at home.

This time, I actually tried maintenance using the wooden cutting board that I have been using for many years!

This is the cutting board used this time.

I bought it at a kitchen general store a few years ago and use it mainly for camping.

I think it was lacquered, but now that I’ve used it for several years, the surface is rough and it feels bad to the touch. In addition, some stains such as stains can be seen in some places.

Since the cutting board is sometimes used as a cutting board, the surface is easily scratched, but it can be made to last longer by regular maintenance.

Cutting board maintenance procedure

① First of all, scrape the whole! Removes paint residue (roughness on the surface) and dirt.

② If you use No. 400 paper brush to grind the entire surface, it will be smooth to the touch!

③ Just apply a small amount of oil to the surface of the tree and then dry it.

Even this alone made me look beautiful! All I have to do now is to apply the oil in “Procedure ③” … This time, I will try a little remake before starting the process.

The cutting board described below is not my favorite this time, but (I chose a similar one because it was not sold in online shopping) Because it is a natural wood, the texture will come out by maintaining it.

Also, depending on how dirty the paper shavings are, you can get a cleaner finish by using the ones with the smallest number (# number) in order. * The smaller the number, the rougher the eyes.

[Remake] Dye the cutting board with tea and coffee! Common methods for dyeing cloth and paper

Techniques of “coffee dyeing” and “tea dyeing”

It’s a popular method for dyeing cloth and paper, but it can also dye wood. You don’t need any special materials and you can easily get started with just what you have at home!

This time, I dyed it with tea leaves. You can do the same with instant coffee.

Tea dyeing procedure for cutting board

① Make strong tea with a small amount of hot water

* Add a small amount (about 50 mL) of hot water to the tea leaves for 2 tea spoons, leave it for a while, and let it extract well.

Similarly, when using instant coffee, melt the coffee in a very small amount of hot water to make a strong coffee.

② Soak the tea in the entire cutting board

* We will soak the deeply extracted tea into the entire cutting board.

* It’s easy to do with a cloth!

For small plates and cutlery, I think it’s a good idea to put tea in a deep pot and soak it in it.

③ After soaking in tea, dry the cutting board well.

The unpainted wood after scrubbing is soaked with water directly, so if it is not dried well, it may cause mold and pain. Let’s dry it to the inside.

As a guide, it takes about 24 hours on a low humidity day. It is perfect to dry it in a well-ventilated place for 2-3 days.

④ If the color is light after drying, repeat steps ① to ③ several times.

* I did it twice

The color of the tea is nice. I used Earl Gray tea leaves, but it has a faint scent and makes me feel better.

After drying it well and getting the desired shade, it’s time to apply oil!

[Final finish-to completion] After the cooking oil is applied to the entire cutting board and dried, the remake is completed.

What is recommended for painting wood?

At the final stage, the work of “oil painting” is performed by applying cooking oil to the entire cutting board and letting it blend in.

Speaking of edible oil, rapeseed oil and olive oil are common.

We recommend oils called “dry oils” such as sesame oil and flaxseed oil for painting wood.

Dry oil is characterized by absorbing oxygen in the air and solidifying. I think it will be easier to understand if you imagine the oil paint used for oil painting.

However, there is nothing you can’t do with olive oil or rapeseed oil.

When using these oils (called non-drying oils), it is okay to soak them in and then wipe off the excess oil with a dry paper or cloth.

All the oils are edible, so it’s good to be able to use them with confidence.

② Once the oil has been applied to the whole, let it dry again.

③ Dry it in a well-ventilated place for about a whole day, and it’s done!

As the oil became familiar, the color became even deeper.

Compared to the photo before maintenance, it’s completely different!

The color changed considerably depending on the dyeing of tea and the painting of sesame oil.

In addition, the surface has become smoother due to the shaving, and it has been reborn with a more atmospheric texture.

Because it is troublesome, attachment increases! Let’s use wooden tableware & cutting board for a long time while maintaining

We introduced how to maintain the used wooden tableware (cutting board this time) and how to remake tea dyeing. Oil and tea are at home, so the best thing to do is to start whenever you want!

By the way, the coating of cooking oil will eventually come off, so regular maintenance is required. It may be a little more troublesome than ordinary tableware, but you will be more attached to it if you give it a try. Let’s enjoy the texture of wooden items that gradually deteriorate over time together!
